Human Needs

Part 2/5

There are Six Human Needs in every person on the planet.

There’s Four Primal Needs and Two Spiritual Needs. Regardless of who we are, our backgrounds, our professions, our religion, race, creed – we are all driven to fulfil the primal needs that have been encoded into our nervous systems over centuries. Although each of us is a unique and special soul, we’re all wired in very much the same way.

The Six Human Needs are –

The Four Primal Needs

  1. Certainty/Comfort – We all want stability with the basic necessities such as food, shelter and other material things. When people can’t control circumstances in their life they’ll seek certainty through a state of mind i.e. a religious faith or a positive outlook, or something physical that they know will comfort them, for example food or a job.
  2. Uncertainty/Variety – People have a need to change their state or situation, to use their body and emotions. They’ll seek variety through a number of ways – change of scene, drugs, alcohol, food, travel, physical activity etc.
  3. Significance – Everybody has the need to feel special and important in some way. People will seek to feel significance from others or themselves. If someone feels insignificant they will act in a way to make them feel significant, these could be in negative ways by bullying, getting angry, aggressive or hurting someone e.g. coward punch. People will also meet this need by making others recognise the significance of their insignificance or seeking significance by telling everyone how big and complex their problem. It is important to remember that for many, helplessness is power.
  4. Love/Connection – Humans need to feel connected to someone or something – a person, a value, a habit, an ideal or a sense of identity. A strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something. People can even feel connected through an aggressive interaction.

The Two Spiritual Needs

  1. Growth – everything in the universe is either growing or dying, there’s no other option. People are not satisfied unless their capabilities or understanding are expanding.
  2. Contribution – Every human at some stage relied on contribution (a baby relies on contribution to survive at birth), they need to have a sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others.

Interesting Fact: Any activity, action, or emotion that fulfils at least three needs at a high level becomes an addiction. They can be positive, negative and neutral addictions.

 6 human needs

Which Two of these Six Human Needs do you tend to focus on or value the most?
  • What are the ways (good and bad) you meet these needs? For example, in your relationships, work, eating, exercise, etc.?
  • What do your top two needs need to be to transform your life for the better?
  • What are some things you can do, or new experiences you can participate in to increase your focus on growth and contribution?

There is always a way to fulfill a need, the skill lies in finding a sustainable way to fulfill it and a way that gives you more pleasure than pain.

Now you know why people behave the way they do, you can use this to build rapport with others at work or socially plus recognise patterns within yourself.
